2013 was busy with things other than tourism. I went home to visit family in the states and had such a good time, coming back a lot less home-sick from the states after a good dose of it. Erik grew the hairiest beard EVER, attempting to look like a real Viking. Maggie nearly died of pneumonia and spent 4 days in a Christchurch hospital. Then, once she was better she had her 3rd birthday and started preschool full time. Benjamin enjoyed learning to read and doing basic math in first grade. He also really loved the Maori dances and Christmas carols his class performed at two different evening performances. Caty and Ben got to attend separate night time discos at their school and Maggie and I chaperoned Ben's dance, getting to boogie as well. Caty completed her first year on the alto sax and can play Ode to Joy pretty well now. She finished 6th grade and gets to wear the "Senior" jacket at school for 7th and 8th before going off to High School in two years! Time is flying. The doctor says she grew 5 cm between March and December! Her braces go on in Jan/Feb. We'll see how that affects saxaphone practice...
Anyway, below are a few photos to bring us up to date before I publish pics from our Christmas camping holiday.
Ben and Maggie have really been playing together a lot this year. They seem to have a new level of relationship, more buddies and Ben has been showing a protective streak for her.
Caty's school hockey team did very well this year. Playing in a couple tournaments.

Maggie and I went to see Ben at his school Athletics Day. They are very strict about hats at school because of the ozone hole here. But Maggie refuses most days to wear a hat. She is, however, wearing SPF75 or above.

This is Nape Nape beach. We went again with friends this year. It's a couple hours from Christchurch and quite deserted.

At a neighboring village they had a school fundraiser where you could get a pony ride. Maggie was in heaven.
I got a job as a "Senior Geospatial Analyst" doing mapping and analysis for Transpower, the NZ electric Grid. My first week was in Wellington at HQ getting some training. It was a lot of fun! Back to work
part time isn't so bad.

Wellington is a bustling city. A real city. It's easy to forget they exist when you live in a village at the outskirts of Christchurch, a provincial town missing it's CBD after the quakes.
